NCCAA Offers Career Enhancement Opportunities
Given the uncertainty of the economy, it’s no wonder many people are taking a “wake me up when it’s over” approach. But it’s never been more important to sharpen your professional skills, especially in the always-tenuous non-profit sector.
To help empower its members and employees of other non-profits in North Carolina, NCCAA has developed a two-workshop package called the Career Enhancement Series.
The first workshop, “The Essential Administrative Professional Conference,” will be held April 23-24 at the Brownestone Hotel in Raleigh. Designed for administrative professionals looking to stay both competitive and motivated, the workshop will be led by acclaimed speakers and trainers Linda Lutz and Peggy Collins. The event coincides with National Administrative Professionals Week (formerly Secretary’s Day!), and features an evening reception celebrating these unsung professionals.
The second event, “Asking for Support in Challenging Times: What Every NC Non-Profit Needs to Know,” is aimed at helping those responsible for raising money to be more effective. It will be held on May 19 at the Marriott City Center in Raleigh and serves as the pre-conference event for the NCCAA Annual Conference, which begins that afternoon at the same venue. The presenter will be Laura Fredricks, a fundraising consultant and motivational speaker whose best-selling books include “The Ask:” How to Ask Anyone for Any Amount for Any Purpose.”
Price breaks are available for those registering for both conferences as well as organizations that register more than one attendee. For more information or to register, call 919-790-5757. But hurry: Registration for the Administrative Professionals closes on March 31. Note: The regular NCCAA Annual Conference, “Change: New Leaders, New Opportunities,” is set for May 19-22 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center. The deadline for early-bird registration is April 10. Look for the conference brochure soon for other information, plus an article in next month’s E-Blast.
Yadkin Valley Office Relocation Provides a Welcome Change
For Jo Ann Larkins and her staff at the Yadkin Valley Economic Development District, Inc., January 1 was truly a day of new beginnings. That’s because they moved out of a rundown office the agency had occupied since 1965 into a newer, more spacious facility only two miles away. “We are totally excited about it,” said Jo Ann. The Booneville-based agency, which serves Yadkin, Stokes, Surry and Davie counties, is now located at the former New Hope Baptist Church, which sits on 24 acres. The new facility has plenty of room for the agency’s many activities, including its Head Start program, which will move there soon. Jo Ann says the agency’s board jumped at the opportunity to purchase the former church location, and is now organizing a fundraising campaign to help pay for it. The “I Can Help” campaign, which will reach out to community, has a goal of $350,000. Although
Yadkin Valley’s location is new, its contact information remains the same: It has kept its old phone number and uses a post office box for mail deliveries.
Important Meetings Scheduled For March
Just a reminder that the following NCCAA meetings are set for this week: The NCCAA Board meets on Thursday, March 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the Conference Suites Hotel in Raleigh. That meeting will be followed by the Council of Executive Directors (COED) meeting, which begins the evening of March 12 and continues through March 13. It will also be held at the Conference Suites Hotel.
And on March 27, the NCCAA Eastern District will have its yearly meeting at the New Bern Hotel & Marina in New Bern. The theme is “A New Direction for Changing Times.” The $45 per person cost includes a buffet breakfast and lunch. For more information or to register, contact District Chair Gloria Williams-Wilson at gloriaw@needcaa.com or by phone at 252-442-7106 est. 242.
Also, note that North Carolina Head Start’s 39th Annual Training Conference is scheduled for March 18-20 at the Twin City Quarter in Winston-Salem.
Know Someone Worthy? Nominate Them!
In other conference news, it’s not too late to submit nominations for the 2009 NCCAA Hall of Fame. Persons accepted into the Hall will be officially inducted during a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 21st at 7 p.m. at the Raleigh Marriott City Center as part of the Annual Conference. The NCCAA board will accept nominations until April 17. The Hall is open to individuals, both living and deceased, who have made a significant contribution to the field of Community Action. All nominations must be accompanied by a complete application bearing the signature of the chairperson from the nominating Board, a photograph of the nominee and a $125 application fee. Nomination packages should be mailed to NCCAA Hall of Fame, 4428 Louisburg Road, Suite 101, Raleigh, N.C. 27616.
And to recognize outstanding work by NCCAA members, don’t forget about the NCCAA Annual Awards. Nominations are being accepted for the organization’s three awards, which are named after distinguished Community Action leaders: the Roselle Copeland, the Lonnie Burton, and the Gloria Williams Awards. The deadline for these awards is also April. 17. For more detailed nomination criteria, please refer to the memo sent to all Executive Directors last month, or contact Endia Hall at endia.hall@nccaa.org.
Help Support the NCCAA Annual Conference!
One final note about the Annual Conference: Sponsorships and advertising/exhibitor opportunities are still available to help NCCAA defray costs—while increasing your exposure at the same time. Whether it’s a link on our Web site or a platinum sponsorship, there are options available at many levels. For more information or to request a sponsorship form, contact Endia Hall at endia.hall@nccaa.net.
